Diabetes Finish Up Forever

In 2016, about 1.6 million deaths were caused directly by diabetes, which makes diabetes the seventh leading cause of death in 2016.

Another 2.2 million deaths were attributable to high blood glucose.

This means that a total of 3.8 million people died directly or indirectly from diabetes.

In 2018, lung cancer caused 1.76 million deaths. Breast cancer caused 627 000 deaths. In the same year, 770 000 people died from AIDS or HIV-related illnesses.

This isn’t about playing down a certain disease or arguing about what’s worse, but every time I tell someone that diabetes still causes millions of deaths every year people are very surprised. I also know that it might rather be semi-optimal to compare numbers from different years but people need to understand that diabetes – despite the fact that it’s considered a very “manageable” disease nowadays – is still one of the diseases with the highest death rate worldwide.
