It can also lead to maternal hypothyroidism, which can cause complications such as gestational hypertension, preeclampsia, and postpartum hemorrhage.

Therefore, it is important for pregnant women to consume adequate amounts of iodine. The American Thyroid Association recommends that pregnant women consume at least 220 micrograms of iodine per day. Good dietary sources of iodine include iodized salt, seaweed, dairy products, fish, and eggs. In some cases, prenatal vitamins may also contain iodine.
